50 members joined together for an excellent 3 course dinner in the ‘Club Room’.
Whilst coffee & mints were being enjoyed the 2 Cruising Cups were presented.
The ‘GYC Cruising Cup’ (on the right above) was presented to the Club by G M Dorey (later Sir Graham Dorey) in 1965 and is awarded for the best Log covering a challenging Cruise. This year it was won by Mick Taylor who has sailed ‘Pinta’s Pilot’ mostly singled handed to Lanzarote. As Mick is now making his way home the Cup was accepted by his son Dan – Mick’s wife Jan was also present at the Dinner and was most welcome.
The ‘Nomad Trophy’ presented to the Club by Alan Donaldson and first awarded in 2000 is awarded for the best Log covering a more family style Cruise and was awarded to Chris Bradshaw who with wife Helen has been with son Simon on his yacht ‘Neringa’ cruising Sidney, Australia waters. As Chris was attending a Rotary Charter Dinner the Cup was accepted on his behalf by Richard Storey.
After the formal bit was over Chris Holliman of Henri Lloyd gave an interesting talk covering the life of the founder & current clothing developments using both video & power point to illustrate his talk.
Henri Strzelecki, who was a soldier in the Polish Army, settled in Manchester at the end of the Second World War. ”Mr Henri” as he became known, studied textiles and design before working with local clothing companies in Manchester.
As a keen sailor, in the 1960s, Mr Henri realised the potential of a technical fabric, Bri-Nylon. Forming Henri Lloyd Limited in 1963, Mr Henri pioneered the use of these technical fabrics, closures and safety features within sailing clothing and consequently he revolutionised the world of sailing. The first non-corrosive zip made of nylon, the introduction of a Velcro closure in waterproof garments, and the hand taping of seams as an alternative to varnishing, were all Henri Lloyd’s unique innovations.
An excellent evening.
Thanks are due to Mark Nightingale of Boatworks+ for arranging the talk and to Vanessa, her team, and the Chefs for helping to make it go so well.
