Carnac next for RS Feva Sailors
Wednesday, 21 July 2010 20:23

000.JPGLater this week the Guernsey RS Feva sailors will travel south to Brittany for the highlight of the season, the ALLEN RS Feva World Championships. On the waters off Carnac, the four Guernsey RS Fevas will face the stiffest imaginable competition the class can offer with 140 plus boats from eight nations on the start line.

“This is our first big international regatta and no doubt it is going to be tough”, says Adam Goddard, who is helming one of the Fevas with Hanna Rickards crewing. “But we have put in lots of training and come very well prepared so it’s going to be good.”

In the other three Guernsey Fevas we will see Abigail Tanguy and Malin Asplund, David Sidebottom and Matthew Beck and Graham and Jonathan Beck in a father and son constellation. In addition, overseas Guernsey sailor George Thompson will be crewing for Hayling Island's Harry Bowerman just as he did at the 2008 World Championships in Sweden.

0000.JPGArriving in Carnac on Saturday, the sailors will take the opportunity to get a flavour of the local waters and a practice race is also scheduled for Sunday. Adam who has done his homework comments:

“The waters outside Carnac are very tidal and with the current forecast we will most likely have a light sea breeze. Not too dissimilar from Guernsey so should suit us well.”

Starting on Monday the championships will be decided over five days and 15 planned races with the World Champions being crowned late Friday afternoon. With the British having established a very strong track record in the class we should not be surprised to see Team GBR sailors on top of the podium.

“Hopefully it will be us”, Adam says with a smile. Together with Hannah Rickards he has set a target of a top third finish but no doubt they aspire higher.

Good luck to all the Feva sailors! Have a great time and bring lots of learnings back home!
