Mixed Results at first Laser Qualifier
Tuesday, 15 March 2011 23:39

The first of the season’s six Laser qualifiers held at Stokes Bay, Hampshire, this last weekend saw varied conditions and mixed results. Andy Bridgman, representing the GYC in the Radial class, reports from the event:

Rocked up early on Saturday morning to a clear sky and about 10-12 knots of a steady fresh breeze from the east. About 120 radial and 80 standards including all the Olympic standard contenders led by Goody and Nick Thompson and the Radial Olympic women. First event of 2011 season with Italian, French, Bulgarian and Irish as well as UK sailors.

0000_Laser_Squad_6_March_102.JPGFirst race, strong tide weakening off. Had a good middle start and kept out early to gain from tide and kept good lane to finish 15th out of 60. In the second race I got rolled by an Irish in the start. On the second beat the wind died to three knots with a two knot tide in the opposite direction. But the race continued and I ended up last after a terrible second beat leaving me in 70th overall after day one.

In the first race on day two I was around tenth half-way through but the race was abandoned as wind died off. Tide now going from west. Everyone went ashore but then wind filled in again from the west and all rushed back out and had two races. Race one, 15 knots and managed to hold on to 16th place. Then in second race I had a good pin end start on biased end. Tacked across the fleet to get to less tide on other side of race course but got caught out as boats that went left got more wind and came across to mark leaving me in about 40th. Then managed to gain back to 31st for end of race to finish 45th overall.

Now looking forward to next event and would like to thank Kings Life and Condor Ferries for support.
