Friday, 13 January 2017 15:03

The Guernsey Sporting Achievement Awards were held on 12th January at Beau Sejour to celebrate a broad range of sporting achievements in 2016.

GYC Juniors were nominated in four categories:

Ellie Tanguy, for outstanding sporting achievements - Lambourne Shield.

Arthur Collenette and Clementine Thompson for the greatest progress last year  - Sir John Loveridge Trophy.

Mike Chapple for outstanding contribution to the sport as a coach - Dave Dorey Memorial Trophy.

The Guernsey Yacht Club, for organisation of Trophee des Iles by a team of over 25 volunteer parents - Sport Guernsey and Nautical Guernsey Shield.

Arthur Collenette and Mike Chapple were both shortlisted in their respective categories with their achievements and contributions highlighted in detail to the audience.

Arthur has had a fantastic year locally winning 2 trophies, in some events competing against sailors 4 years older. Arthur worked really hard over the winter putting in many hours of training, even on cold and windy days. His boat handling and racing skills have improved immensely and shown in results on the national stage. In 2016 Arthur moved up from beginner to main fleet for national events. As a 12 year old he has been competing against the best in the country at an under 15 level. His results of 78th and 64th at two national events giving him an overall ranking of 78th gaining him an invite to the RYA Team GB Selection trails. A high national ranking in this first year in the main fleet, the highest a Guernsey sailor has been ranked in the last 5 years, a huge achievement. Arthur also shared the Guernsey Sailor of the Year prize.

Mike has spent thousands of hours as a volunteer coaching sailing in Guernsey over 20 years. His outstanding contribution and dedication to the sport has seen it grow from supervised free sailing available to a select few to a structured training and racing programme which now has 200 children participating. Mike has been instrumental to the success of Guernsey sailors locally, nationally and internationally. He made a huge contribution to the skills of all 26 national team members, 2 national champions and 1 world champion’s sailing careers over the years. He was the first coach to take a group of youngsters off island in 1997 and is still funding himself to support Guernsey sailors as team coach at national events to this day. This year he also attended three selection weekends with three Under 12 Guernsey sailors to coach and support them; they all achieved their goal of selection to the RYA South of England Zone Squad.

Congratulations to all nominees for their success and contribution to sailing in Guernsey.
