Guernsey Sports Commission Awards(20/1/10)
At the Guernsey Sporting Achievement Awards Evening for 2009 at Beau Sejour last night, Mike Chapple and Johanna Asplund were shortlisted among the top three in their respective categories, Mike for the Development Award and Johanna for the Lambourne Shield . Both were eventually beaten to the line, Mike by cricket coach Mike Kinder and Johanna by National Boys Team hockey player Adam Clark. “It is fantastic to see Johanna and Mike being shortlisted for these prestigious awards, it is a true reflection of their hard work and determination. Having both a sailor and a coach among the top three is also a great tribute to our Club”, says Mike Higgins, GYC Junior Co-ordinator and continues: “Johanna and Mike would both have been worthy winners. Now, they did not go all the way but this can only be seen as a token of the exceptionally high standards of sports here in Guernsey”. Guest Speaker Katharine Merry, Sydney 2000 400m Olympic Bronze medalist, presented theprices and delivered a most engaging and telling speech. Johanna was also nominated for the Brewery Salver Award. The top award, the Guernsey Sports Commission Trophy to the outstanding performer of the year went to tennis player and Junior US Upen Champion Heather Watson.
