The GYC Motor Committee’s Round the Island Trip was a great success and over 60 people enjoyed a luxury cruise around the Island, stopping off to have a look around the Hanois Lighthouse and lunch on the cruisers in the beautiful Rocquaine Bay. The now traditional Friday evening briefing began with a most interesting talk from Guernsey’s Harbourmaster, Captain Peter Gill. His specially prepared talk on “Channel Islands Search and Rescue” brought together the themes of the previous presentations on the Marine Ambulance, St Peter Port lifeboat and Channel Island Air Search. Especially interesting was the difference the introduction of motor lifeboats made and also the benefits of the increased speed of the craft. A fine Lasagne and very hot Curry buffet competed the evening.
Round the IslandSaturday saw perfect weather for a Round the Island Trip with winds F2 to F3 from the West and no swell. Members met at the Guernsey Yacht Club and enjoyed bacon and sausage rolls together with coffee and tea.
The 4 luxury cruisers, Redoutable, Kaan II, Solaris and Forty-Six left sharp at 11:30 hours together with the superb RIBS of Paul Mahy and Steve Nicolle.
Captain Barry Paint was the expert guide for the trip and used all his vast knowledge of the west coast to lead the boats right inside the reefs.
The cruise first went round “The World”, as the cruise ship of that name was moored in the Little Russell. Then South around the coast and into Petit Bot bay.
The rocks around the Hanois look treacherous from the land, but with Capt Paint’s expertise, the cruisers were able to hold station at the base of the lighthouse and the RIBS took people to the steps so they could have a look around.
Over 50 people enjoyed a unique visit to the Hanois which everyone agreed was very special.
Back on the cruisers, they anchored in a sheltered spot in beautiful Rocquaine Bay and enjoyed lunch on the boats.
Barry led the boats up the west coast, going right into Perelle, Vazon and Cobo bays before going around the north of the Island and back to the marina.
Drinks and a BBQ on the cruisers completed an excellent and unique day.
