Doom and Gloom and then the GYC Motor Launch event

As you know, I’m not one to be a party-pooper; quite the reverse. However I’m afraid I have to break it to you that we are rapidly approaching the most depressing day of the year. Commonly termed ‘Blue Monday’, it is a phenomenon that occurs once a year, each and every year. This year January 24th is that day.

The science behind Blue Monday was formulated in 2005 by Dr. Cliff Arnall a researcher at Cardiff University.

Dr. Arnall created his formula by looking at six distinct factors:
  • weather conditions
  • debt level and our ability to pay it off
  • time since Christmas
  • time since failing to keep New Years resolutions
  • our general seasonal motivational levels and
  • our need to have something to look forward to
However, us motor boaters don’t buy in to that mumbo jumbo. Oh no. At this time of year we have the pleasures of tipping water off tonneau covers, emptying dehumidifiers, negotiating with engineers a service date before September 2015, receiving mooring fees for the year and a whole host of other spirit-lifting experiences. You see, with all this to think about, Doctor Chuckle’s 6 factors pale into insignificance.

However, it is all worth it. There is, without fail, one day a year when the weather, tides and weekend all fall in line to make it worth annually spending those thousands and thousands of pounds.

In addition to that day (a day I like to call ‘Summer’) this year we can all look ahead excitedly to the Motor Committee’s timetable of events for water-based activities. (Hooray, I hear you say!) We have now set a date for the first briefing session and this will take place at 7pm, Saturday 19th February at the Yacht Club. We will explain what we have lined up for the season and will have guest speaker, Brian Evans (Marine Electronics) who will give a 10 to 15 minute talk on various electronic projects that his company is currently involved in.

Food will be served after the briefing and for the miniscule sum of £8.75 per head you can choose between:
  • Steak and Mushroom pie chips and peas
  • Bacon wrapped chicken breast Chasseur
  • Lemon Tyne crusted fillet of salmon with lemon butter sauce
  • Vegetarian curry with rice and poppadom

If you plan to attend we would ask that you email Colin Le Conte at colin [at] digimap.gg or call him on 700321 so that we can determine numbers for the night. Please let him know your food order at the same time.

We would urge you to come along and sign up for the 2011 events. If you didn’t participate in last year’s outings and are curious to know what we got up to, come along and meet old and new friends to see if it’s the kind of thing you would like to be involved in.

See you all in February, and in the meantime, keep your spirits up!
