In June the GYC hosted the Channel Island Finals of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championships. The event, sponsored by Honda and Highfield RIBs is part of a National Championship in which 8 to 16-year-old RIB drivers demonstrate their speed and skills with the goal of winning a Highfield 460 or a HonwaveT40 for their club.
The Championship is the UK’s leading programme introducing children to powerboating, promoting, safe, proficient driving and boat handling skills.
A number of young GYC members spent several weeks training for the event. The Championship course involves negotiating a slalom course, a controlled stop and reversing exercise, all against the clock.
This year, due to the high costs of travel the GYC ran the finals without the attendance of the RYA competition manager and boat. Whilst unfortunate it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because a strong southerly blew up just a few hours before the start of the event rendering the competition area in Havelet bay unusable. The final was rescheduled for a few days later and Luke Le Pelly and Joe Coutanche took the top spots in the under 13’s and under 16’s respectively and secured their tickets to the National Finals in Southampton.
The National Finals took place at the Southampton Boat Show and 13 drivers in each age group represented their clubs from all over England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Joe and Luke both completed their two, timed runs without putting a foot wrong setting fast times without penalties. This paid off and they were both rewarded with 2nd places, with Joe narrowly missing out on the win by just 1.43 seconds! This was the GYC’s best showing ever and witnessed by a band of GYC members, family and friends who raised the biggest cheers at the presentation as the results were announced.
Well done to Joe and Luke.
