Junior Sailing and Boating

We aim to offer an exciting and fun programme of sailing and related activities for children aged from 5 to 18 years. Here is what the Guernsey Yacht Club offers young people:

Junior Sailing & Dolphin

Saturday drop-in sessions - 5 years old and over

During the school summer holidays come along to our Saturday morning drop-in sessions. You just turn up before the session starts to register, pay your money and away you go. The sessions are run on a first come first served basis. No previous experience necessary.

GYC Junior Sailing

Explorers - Minimum age 6, Beginners

Introducing our young sailors to the basics of boat handling, sailing Oppies on The Islands Victoria Model Yacht Pond. This is a Pre-Pirate group ran in conjunction with the Guernsey Sailing Trust. Sessions take place on a Monday or Tuesday evening.

GYC Junior Sailing

Pirates - 6 years old and over

Pirates is a structured course where young sailors learn to sail Oppies on The Islands Victoria Model Yacht Pond, to provide them with the necessary skills to be able to sail on the sea. Sessions take place on a Wednesday evening or Saturday morning.

GYC Bucaneers - Juniors

Once your child has enough experience, Buccaneers is the next stage. We run a structured course to develop and improve skills with the majority of lessons taking place on the sea in Oppie dinghies with a chance to sail an Optimist (lighter and faster) boat and experience one or two races. Sessions take place on a Sunday afternoon.

GYC - Junior Optimist Racing

Once your child has their own Optimist they can train and race regularly on the sea. There will be opportunities to travel to the UK to compete in racing events as part of a Guernsey team. Sessions take place on a Sunday afternoon.

GYC - Junior Fevas Racing

Fevas and Lasers

Teenagers will typically progress on to the Feva (double handed) or Laser (single handed) dinghies. These provide the opportunity to progress through the RYA and other development paths, to compete locally with adult sailing and in national and international events.

Yacht Racing

With experience, older juniors will have the opportunity to join the adult teams racing yachts and gain new perspectives on being part of a team.

RIB Challenge

An annual RYA competition for which children aged 8 to 16 can train to handle a small power boat around a set course, compete in the Channel Islands regional heat from which the winners compete in the national final at the Southampton Boat Show. They will need to have a basic knowledge of boat handling so a Power Boat 1 certificate is required as a minimum. For further information: Please attend the Open Morning on Saturday 1st April at 11 am until 1 pm (with free sailing on the Model Yacht Pond from 10 am to 12 pm)
